ready to go

Two thoughts:

1. I hate being a senior. I hate being older than everyone. I hate looking out over a sea of people in chapel or in the great hall and knowing that almost none of them remember the same Covenant I do. I remember when I first came here Covenant seemed like the home I'd been looking for since my family moved back to the States and I was so happy to be here. Since then it's changed so much, I don't feel at home here anymore. I still love my friends and my room and my hall, but I feel ready to move on.

2. I like a Jane Austen book. At least so far. I just read the first chapter of Northanger Abbey and I loved it. It reminded me of Stephen Leacock, whose hilarious short stories I read when I was little. Just listen: "A family of ten children will be always called a fine family, where there are heads, and arms, and legs enough for the number." And of the heroine: "Indeed she had no taste for a garden, and if she gathered flowers at all, it was chiefly for the pleasure of mischief."

If I remember correctly, Northanger Abbey was Austen's first, and more satirical than the others, ridiculing standard notions of romance. Of course, it ends in marriage like all the rest...

PS I was leafing through a World magazine this evening, and a full page ad for Covenant College caught my eye. As I looked at the new logo, the description of the school, the ariel perspective of the buildings I used to inhabit, I asked myself, "Did I really graduate from this school?" Weird sensation.

Welcome to my world from last year. Being a senior is awesome for about a month, and then you realize you're done. And it's time to go.

I'm just glad I graduated in December before things got really bad. Only now I'm back in class with freshmen. Yay.

I was very glad to be done. I used to purposely try not to meet new people. And found every excuse possible to get excused from chapel, so that I wouldn't have to see people. And leave mean signs on "my" computer in the library lab where I was writing my SIP. In fact, I just left a crate in that lab for my stuff with mean signs on it not to move it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Only for me it's worse, because even all you seniors don't remember the Covenant I remember. I look around, and all the graduating seniors look like babies. Not literally of course, but sometimes it feels that way.
I know I'm not really much older than most, and some of you are older than I am - but I feel so old and sage, and frustrated because being the wise one just isn't as nice as I used to think it would be.
Oh well. Here's to growing up.
